The first official Inline Boarding Canadian National Championship is in the books and several new riders made a name for themselves in the Dirtsurfer world! None deserve more respect than Alexandre Vincent, Guillaume Landry and Gabriel Legace, finishing 1st, 2nd and 5th (1st in consolation race) respectfully after only two months riding experience! Michel Leduc, eighth place finisher and owner of Sports Plus, the ultimate Dirtsurfer shop in Montreal, paid registration fees for these three staff members and pushed them to practice day in and day out on the local Mont-Royal course. As experienced racers from Western Canada and the US modified and upgraded their boards with the expectation of going head-to-head with each other, these three unknowns slipped under the radar and took home the hardware on their GPs! To add to the Montreal mauling, David Legault, another local with one year of riding experience, participated in his first race and took home the Bronze on his GP!

Newcomer, Tom Whalen, a seventeen year-old from Brownfield, Maine, USA took 4th place in his first inline boarding road race. Tom is not a newcomer to gravity sports, however. He has been racing gravity bikes since 2002 and was first place overall in GSI standings in 2003. Tom also placed 3rd overall for GSI points in streetluge in 2003! Another American rider with more experience than his age would suggest, 15 year-old Chase Turman of Franklin County, Virginia, took 7th! Chase helped inline boarding gain much respect from the speedboard discipline this year, demonstrating his exceptional skating ability out of the starting gate. At times, Chase didn't mount his board until he was around the first corner; over a block into the race! The consolaton final featured well-known Dirtsurfer Pro Rider, MAD MIKE Hachkowski, who was not going down easy - taking second for sixth place overall; Western Canada's highest placing. Congratulations are also due to Toronto native, Matt Middleton, for winning all three of his qualification heats; one of only three riders, alongside Alexandre Vincent and Gabriel Legace, to accomplish this in 2005! Props to Rob Turman for continuing to compete even after a nasty fall, on turn one in his first heat, left him with a separated shoulder!

This year's event proved that inline boarding is truly a national sport and worthy of respect in the hardcore gravity sports world! All that beared witness to Top Challenge 2005 will be anxiously awaiting the next chapter!
